The Smith Residence
The Smith residence is located south of Gallatin Gateway, MT in a rural/agricultural setting. The 21-acre property was purchased in 2001, the existing house extensively remodeled, added on to and totally changed in character. Following completion of each construction phase that included the residence and barn, the opportunity to create a beautiful landscape setting to complete the transformation of the property was undertaken.

Stone walls were created from boulders unearthed during excavation operations. Native Frontier sandstone was used to create stairs and pathways, moss rock boulders were used to transition changes in grade.

The backyard patio built in 2006 was Phase III in the landscape renovation; adding an extended outdoor living space from the cedar decking into the expansive lawn area. Blocky Chief Cliff stone boulders created a simple retaining/seat wall to embrace the native Frontier sandstone patio.

Planting beds filled with a mixture of trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials frame the home and other outdoor living areas.

The variety of plant species provides a yearlong show of color and texture. The evolution of the gardens has resulted in a rich tapestry of plants that reflects the seasonal changes of nature.
